FOREIGN LANGUAGE TIPS:  Avoid getting uptight in this class.  Relax, expect to make mistakes, and learn to laugh at them!  One of the greatest obstacles to language learning is self-consciousness.  Be patient and consistent in your studying.  A foreign language requires daily written and oral study if you are serious about learning it well.

CLASS ATTENDANCE:  When you are in school you are to attend this class.  Do not be late!!  ONE tardy will result in a fifteen minute detention.  Three tardies may result in a referral.

ABSENCES AND MAKE-UP WORK:

  1. It is your responsibility to request any make-up work.  Tests or homework assigned before your absence will be due the day of your return.
  2. In cases of extended illness, you will be given the number of days you were absent in which to complete work missed during your absence.  Work assigned prior to your absence is due the day of your return.  This will include any tests and quizzes.
  3. I also expect you, when absent due to appointments of any nature (dental, medical, funerals, etc.), to obtain work prior to the class you know you will be missing.
  4. When missing a class due to a planned school activity (e.g. student council meeting, field trip, etc.), you are responsible for contacting me for make-up work at least one day in advance of the activity.

MATERIALS:  Be ready to begin class when the bell rings.  This includes having all the materials you will need for the class period (e.g. text, notes, workbook, readers, supplies, etc).  If you habitually have to leave class to get needed materials, you may be marked tardy to class.

NOTEBOOK:  You should keep a separate notebook or folder for vocabulary lists, verb conjugations, notes, worksheets, etc.  This method is suggested to help you to organize yourself for more effective study.

CLASS WORK:  Homework is assigned most days.  You are expected to do whatever is required of you during class. I would like for you to spend at least 20 minutes per day studying Spanish.  Homeworks will be revised in a variety of ways.  Some days it will be self grade, some days electronically, teacher grade, or credit no credit.  Just be on task and use your time wisely in class.  Remember!!  This is your chance to impress me with your willingness to try!  You will also receive a conversation grade each midterm.  This grade will be based on your oral practice in class.  Speak Spanish in class!!

GRADES:  All tests and other activities (quizzes, speeches, dialogs, projects etc.) to be graded are announced in advance, and you will always know what will be required of you. I have a homework blog which lists assignments and upcoming items.  It is attached to the school website.  These are the grade breakdown percentages:

Daily work/Homework :  20%

Speaking/ Participation/Essays:  30%

Quizzes/Tests/Projects:  40%

Final exam:  10%

TEXTBOOKS: Our book is Descubre and is available online.  If you would like to checkout a hardcopy, that is optional.  Everyone will create an online account and the online resources provide good review and practice.  Be very wary of online translators.  Those are always a bad idea and could cost you many points.

PARENT CONTACT:  I believe your parents are interested in and concerned about your progress in this class.  I will contact your parents if you are experiencing academic/behavioral problems.  If you find that you are struggling academically, PLEASE come see me for help.  I am available most days after school!!

PERSONAL ELECTRONICS:  Please refrain from using your cell phone and music players in class.  I would prefer them to be off.  You may lose those items for the day or week and I might send them to the office or call your parent to come pick them up.
